Iris’ movie recommendation of the week

Though this blog is a FilmTiki venture, I figured that it is perfectly fine to write about the kinds of films I like and want to spotlight every once in a while. And since we are all cinephiles here, I wanted to share my personal passion for this one with you.

One great thing about going to festivals is that every now and then you actually get to see a film! Which, in my case, is miraculous, given my busy schedule of meetings and interviews. Last month in TriBeCa I was lucky enough to see War, Inc. ahead of its limited release this week (I wrote about it before). Today, those of you in New York and LA will get the chance to see it. All I can say is carpe diem - buy a ticket, and don’t buy popcorn. You are bound to choke on it from laughing hysterically (or nervously in some scenes… which is a good thing).

War, Inc. is a film that is right up my alley. It has it all: it is meaningful, crazy, thought-provoking, sincere, with its heart in the right place, a wild ride through genres, has ingenious performances (I expected this much from the stellar cast, but I was especially surprised by Hilary Duff - who would have thought!!), bold writing (the script was cooked up by Jeremy Pikser, John Cusack and Mark Leyner), a doco-inspired style (Josh Seftel, who comes from a doco background, directs) and the filmmakers simply say what they mean.

So, if you want to see some brave independent (yes, it is an indie flick) filmmaking, get down to the theatres today. And tell me what you thought.

P.S.: I also saw Indiana Jones 4 in Cannes on Sunday at its press screening. If you liked the first three, you will like this one… but see War, Inc. first. That is my ranking.
