Today i entered the Talent Campus to watch the interview with German director Tom Tykwer and was asked to show my accreditation badge at the entrance. I showed them my badge for the EFM, which is the industry marketplace at the Berlinale; the place where producers, directors, film commissions, funding agencies and press meet, the place where all the deals happen. As my badge was not recognized, i realized that it was possible that none of the industry businessmen had attended a single event for the emerging talent at the festival. I mean, there is so much innovation, energy and capabilty there, so in fact this should rather be the place to go to discover the future stars of international cinema.
Tykwer is doing his movies in a way that’s actually quite interesting as he switches skilfully between what is considered as “european cinema” and big hollywood budgets. He does this in his latest movie The International, starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts. And yet he follows a cinephile tradition of producing movies in an ongoing learning-process in terms of visual style and team-work. The way Tykwer shared his visions of cinematography with the audience today and other experts did the days before on Talent Campus, is so important for young directors, screenwriters and producers and hopefully will be continued in the years to come!
Here’s one of Tykwer’s nice, private anecdotes from today’s “In the Limelight”. To watch more of them, visit FilmTiki on Dailymotion:
