Here’s a summary of what happened this week – 20 July to 26 July 2009:

Global Video Highlights from Cisco:

A recent forecast on the impact of visual networking applications published by Cisco revealed some exciting figures for the filmmaking industry:
  • Internet video is now responsible for approximately one-third of all consumer Internet traffic
  • The sum of all forms of video (TV, video on demand, Internet, and P2P) will account for over 91 percent of global consumer traffic by 2013
  • In 2013, Internet video will be nearly 700 times of the U.S. Internet backbone in 2000
  • Video communications traffic growth is accelerating
  • Real-time video is becoming more important
  • Video-on-demand (VoD) traffic will double every two years until 2013

VOD in the USA

Recent figures on VOD in the USA were posted by videobusiness this week, based on a statement by Rentrak that says VOD transactions went up 15% from May to June. That’s partly due to the rising amount of transactions concerning free children’s programming due to the summer holidays.

Summer At The Movies, And The Livin’ Ain’t Easy:

Journalist John Horn talks in National Public Radio about this year’s movie summer and comes to the following conclusion:

I think the audience is becoming a little bit more picky. They’re much more interested in what their friends are recommending than what critics are recommending.

Nowadays moviegoers share their impressions with their friends, right after they exit the theaters, as Horn continues, reffering to Sacha Baron Cohen’s Brüno:

So what that says is that people came out of that movie and told their friends not to go see it. When movies are not recommended by their friends, they fall faster then they’ve ever fallen.

The beginners guide to viral marketing:

A new episode of the “Beginners guide to viral marketing” was published on IndieGoGo. This time Saskia Wilson-Brown reveals her favorite resources for filmmakers, including social bookmarking and social networking sites, video hosting platforms and communities for self-distribution and fundraising. Sadly she didn’t mention FilmTiki :-(

Despite filesharing, German cinemas achieve record results

According to a study from the Zukunft Kino Marketing Gmb, read on gulli:news, the number of visitors in German cinemas have never been as high during the last five years as in this year’s first half. Compared to 2006 this is a rise in ticket sales up 8.5 percent.
